The Taurus Stomp-Head 5 is designed and hand-built in Poland. It’s the latest version of their ‘amp in a floor pedal’ and one that could offer something genuinely new to the marketplace.
Up until now you either bought an amp head or a combo. Your amp head may have lived in a 19” rack, but essentially it was the same thing as a regular head. A few companies are now trying out a pedal-format amp. Last year saw the Thomas Blug signature amp in a pedal unit, the Bluguitar Amp1, which utilised a nano tube to get some of its tones.
Taurus have used full sized 12AX7 tubes and managed to squeeze a 90-Watt guitar head into a small floor pedal. And it’s not just a valve preamp, as this unit has a full power amp output that can cater for 4-,8- and 16-Ohm speaker cabinets. It also features an FX loop plus a direct out with a speaker emulation built in. It features three channels all with their own 3-band EQ, as well as a built-in boost function and a noise gate. There are five footswitches, with the fifth allowing you to mute the unit. You can choose from Classic, Classic Lead and High Gain channels, each with its own dedicated footswitch and control section on the unit. The whole thing weighs under 3 kg, making it lighter than the bag I take to gig that’s got my cables in. That is not bad at all.
This could be a useful piece of kit for gigging and studio use. The fact it is so compact appeals to me, as most of my amps are pretty heavy and bulky, so to have something this size might appeal to many players just like myself. The tones will, obviously, be what makes or breaks this product, and as I haven’t been to Poland to try one yet I cannot comment directly.
