Creativity can come from anywhere, a different type of sequencer, an added effect, or a new style of synthesis. Let’s take a closer look at the offers currently available.

Novation Circuit Rhythm

The Novation Circuit Rhythm is a portable 8-track sampling groovebox with a simple, screenless interface. Rather than diving through menus, the workflow is focused around the 32-step pattern sequencer.

This makes the Circuit Rhythm a really fun instrument to use, with basic functions like slice, reverse, loop, and chromatic playing. In addition, there are creative features like step probability and pattern-mutate that can produce unexpected results.

Built-in effects include lo-fi tape, stutter, reverb, delay, and a bus compressor to level the sounds. Meanwhile, the rechargeable battery gives you up to 4 hours of use, which is enough to play a live show.

Befaco FX Boy

Early gaming consoles meets Eurorack effects? The Befaco FX Boy is a versatile 12 HP slot-loading effects module. It comes with seven effects cartridges, including Making Sound Machines Analog Wavefolder, Tesseract Modular AVMA, TouellSkouarn Eskuara, Feedback Modules Flanger, XOR Electronics FX Girl, Instruo microPhaser, and Befaco Trash.

There are two basic operating modes and two main parameters to tweak each effect. What’s more, there’s a 4-band EQ with CV inputs on each band and it can be placed pre or post-FX in the signal path.

Although it might not be the most practical design, it does make you wonder if Befaco will release more effects cartridges. A wide range of effects adds value, and you can even modulate the Wet/Dry mix, which is a nice touch.

Erica Synths Bassline DB-01

Although it’s capable of producing similar sounds, the Bassline DB-01 is not trying to be a TB-303. With more waveform shapes, a multimode filter, a sub-oscillator, a BBD detune, and overdrive you can go well beyond the scope of most bassline synths.

What’s more, there’s an arpeggiator and the 64-step pattern sequencer has an automation track for recording the filter cutoff movement. This provides a great platform for generating leads and basslines with plenty of sound squelching options.

In addition, the DB-01 has MIDI, CV, and Clock I/O so it offers connectivity with a wide range of instruments. Overall, it offers creative fluidity and a great analogue sound, perfect for electronic music of any style.

Korg Minilogue Bass

The Minilogue Bass is a limited edition version of Korg’s popular compact 4-voice polyphonic analogue synth. Apart from the darker look, it also features a new sound library of 100 unique presets designed for the Bass edition.

When creating sounds, the Minilogue gives you eight different voice modes, including Poly, Mono, Duo, Chord, Unison, Delay, Arp, and Sidechain. What’s more, there’s a built-in delay effect with a high-pass filter.

Besides that, one of the greatest aspects of the Minilogue is its 16-step pattern sequencer. This makes it a great instrument for Dawless jams and it has four motion tracks for controlling different parameters.

Soma Enner Red

The Soma Enner is about as non-linear as it gets when it comes to synthesizer design. Built as an electro-acoustic instrument, the Enner offers a wide range of rather unorthodox input methods that also offer creativity and fun.

These include conductive pads and knobs, as well as a piezo contact mic, and three bolts for mounting springs, rubber bands, and other items for triggering and manipulating the sound.

The analogue synth architecture combines a 5-voice polyphonic synth, a rhythmic bass synth, a stereo multimode filter, and a stereo delay with cross-modulation. Overall, it’s an unpredictable source of creativity which is welcome in any studio.
