Spotify announced more positive developments at its open house event in Stockholm this week. CEO Daniel Ek revealed that Spotify now has over 100 million paying subscribers in Europe, accounting for around 40% of its global premium user base. This announcement underscores Spotify’s growing presence and influence in the European music market. As part of its „Loud & Clear Report 2025“, Spotify published detailed data on the remuneration of European artists.

Spotify Paid €1.7 Billion to EU Artists – A New Record

As part of the latest report, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek published data on payments to European artists. In 2024, European artists received payments totaling over €1.7 billion from Spotify, a 15% increase from the previous year. This sum is almost twice as high as in 2020 and more than three times as high as in 2017.

Notably, 57% of the revenue comes from artists who do not sing in English. This underscores the cultural diversity and success of local music in Europe. As part of the report, Spotify also published data on artist remuneration. In 2024, European artists received over €1.7 billion in payments from Spotify, marking a 15% increase from the previous year.

The platform has a significant impact on the international visibility of European artists. In 2024, European musicians were „discovered“ nearly 28 billion times worldwide, with their music being streamed 351.66 billion times. In the US, European artists were included in playlists created by around 830 million users; in Mexico, by 183 million; and in Brazil, by 148 million. Overall, that sounds quite positive.

The Streaming Provider also focuses on promoting female artists. Over the past four years, global Spotify streams of European female artists have increased by 83%, and within Europe, by 81%. More than 400 European female musicians have been included in Spotify’s EQUAL program, which supports female artists through targeted promotion and visibility.

Germany, France, and the UK: Streaming Drives Music Markets

Regional analyses also show positive developments. In Germany, payments to musicians rose by 17% to €480 million, with over half of the revenue going to independent musicians or labels. In France, four times as many artists earned over €100,000 in 2021 as in 2017. Belgian artists generated over 80% of their revenue from listeners outside of Belgium, highlighting their international relevance. In Denmark, 192 musicians earned more than 500,000 DKK, and total payouts rose to 334 million DKK.

In the United Kingdom, the number of artists earning at least £10,000, £50,000, or £100,000 doubled since 2017. The number of musicians earning over £1 million has increased by 20% since 2023. Despite this positive news, the streaming provider still has a negative image among musicians due to its lower payouts per stream compared to other streaming providers, as well as negative headlines. However, due to its high number of users and widespread popularity, the platform remains extremely important for musicians.
