Soundevice Digital and United Plugins have released TrapTune. Like its name suggests, the multi-effect plug-in is designed to create the characteristic, fashionable vocal effects of modern trap, hip hop and RnB tracks. It starts of course with an automatic tuner – but that’s only the beginning.

Current trap and hip hop productions make heavy use of effects to shape unusual, highly recognizable vocal sounds. Often, the results only vaguely resemble a human voice – but that’s the whole idea. To achieve this type of effect, you’d normally have to set up a whole chain of plug-ins, including Auto-Tune-style pitch correction, pitch and formant shifting, distortion, and more. TrapTune by Soundevice Digital is a multi-effect plug-in that combines all of that and more in one place.
First is of course the namesake Tuning section, which delivers anything from subtle pitch correction to hard auto-tuning, the developer says. You can adjust the effect with the Intensity, Speed, and Style knobs. This section also includes a transposer (pitch shifter), as well as a formant shifter.
In addition to this, TrapTune offers a Second Voice section that helps to fatten up the sound by adding another voice. You can sing in unison with yourself or transpose the second voice to create harmony. A stereo control allows you to adjust the stereo width.
Next is a multi-effect section that includes three essential effects commonly used for trap vocals: distortion, reverb, and delay. Soundevice Digital says that all of them are specifically tuned for vocals. All come with useful sets of parameters that let you dial in precisely the sound you want, while not making things more complicated than they should be.
Each of TrapTune’s five effects offers a bypass switch, so you can use them individually or in any combination you like. The plug-in also comes with a large selection of presets that you can use as a starting point for your own creations.
