According to Rupert Neve Designs, the new 5254 Diode Bridge Compressor is based on the dynamics circuit from the company’s Shelford Channel Strip. As such, it’s an evolution of the iconic Neve 2254 Lim-Comp module originally released in the late 1960s.

The 5254 Diode Bridge Compressor offers two channels of this classic design in a compact format, with some modern improvements for today’s production needs. The 5254 uses custom transformers and Class-A line amplifiers. The compressor can operate in either dual mono or stereo linked configurations.

Instead of separate attack and release knobs, each channel offers a unified timing control with six settings for different applications. The FAST button increases the attack and release speeds for each setting, so you effectively get 12 different timing constants, which adapt themselves slightly depending on ratio, threshold, and source material, the manufacturer says.

The 5254 offers 31-position stepped controls throughout, which is especially useful in mastering. They’ve also added internal parallel processing, with each channel offering a blend knob. There’s also a sweepable side-chain high-pass filter in each channel, as well as an external side-chain insert loop. Other improvements to the classic design include significantly lower noise and higher voltage power rails, the manufacturer says.

The release of the 5254 is exciting news for anyone who cherishes that classic Neve sound – and who doesn’t, really! The dual-channel diode bridge design is also an interesting alternative to the company’s VCA-based designs like the Master Buss Processor if you prefer a more harmonically rich tonality.

Master Buss Processor now available in black

Speaking of the MBP, Rupert Neve Designs has also announced that the dual-channel compressor/limiter is now available with a black paint job by popular request. Nothing has changed on the inside, but if you prefer a darker color scheme for your outboard gear, this new version will surely please you.
