We all knew it was about to drop after a few select PRS US dealers leaked it by accident on their websites – now the PRS John Mayer Silver Sky has been officially announced – and it’s available to order…

It took about a year to finally become official, having been used by John live. In fact, he even shared it ‘unofficially’ on social media. Now we have all the official details and finishes for this new PRS Artist Signature model. Here’s what John had to say about the design process:

“It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.”

Released at last

Due out on 20th March and available in the colour schemes Tungsten, Frost, Onyx and Horizon, the first 500 guitars to ship will include a commemorative hardshell case. After that, the PRS John Mayer Silver Sky model will come as standard with a gig bag.

The rest of the specifications are exactly as we reported earlier, so the only thing to do now is to work out which colour you prefer. Although the price tag is fairly hefty, you’ll probably have to get your order in early to get the version with a hard case. The street price will be a bit less than the official RRP, though.

I’m slowly growing used to the reverse headstock and I would imagine that many players will be fazed by that aspect of the design. However, if it plays well and has the PRS quality we all know and expect then I think it could be a really great guitar.

RRP – GBP 2549

You know, Jeff, you guys over on this side of the pond have been really restrained about this guitar. Not a single gripe, hissy fit, or even snarky quip about it since this post went up. Over here in the States, discussion about this guitar has turned into a major “Mayer sucks-PRS sucks” hatefest of vitriol complete with wailing and gnashing of teeth. Almost as bad is the bad-mouthing of the Heritage Guitar restructuring by the Heritage “fan boys” who are seemingly doing everything they can to throw the company “under the bus” to express their outrage with everything the new owners are trying to do. Yep, this site is a veritable sea of peace and tranquility compared to our forums over here. Much appreciated.

Just goes to show how traditionalist us guitarists are and the fact that we don’t really like change. I figure Mr Mayer is far more popular on your side of the pond than here in the UK. So can see why there is such a polarizing opinion on this new guitar, I think it looks pretty well made and would love to try one out when they hit the stores. I have always enjoyed playing Strat style guitars (my first love) and I own a few PRS instruments, all of which are beautifully crafted. So this new guitar could be the perfect storm.

Its to bad that one would hate on it so much without playing it and hearing it. Not to mention every other company copying the “S” style guitar. People act like PRS is the 1st to do this. The USA is a label whore. If it doesn’t have the correct logo on it, it’s junk. I plan on giving it a go with an open mind. I do like some of the modifications they made.
