PRS has just announced an extremely limited run of its American made S2 Studio model. Only 50 of these instruments will be made and they will be available exclusively for Europe. So if you want to bag one of these special models with their unique switching options, you will need to be quick!
S2 Studio European release
The PRS S2 Studio models are made in the USA, in the company’s Stevensville facility. The guitars feature a mahogany body and a 22-fret mahogany neck, with a ‘pattern regular’ profile, a rosewood fretboard and dot inlays. Hardware includes a set of PRS Low Mass locking tuners and a PRS tremolo bridge, which should make the tuning stability rock solid on these guitars.
Multiple switching options
The limited run models come loaded with a Starla bridge humbucker and two Type-D single-coils in the middle and neck position. A 5-way blade switch provides the following pickup combinations: position one is just the bridge humbucker, which can be split via a push-pull tone pot, position two is the bridge and the middle pickup, position three is the bridge and the neck pickup, position four is the middle and neck pickup, and finally position five is just the neck pickup. Including all those splits, that’s a lot of pickup options! Nice.
There are four finishes to choose from: Antique White with a tortoise-shell pickguard, Frost Blue Metallic with a Mint pickguard, Tobacco Sunburst with a tortoise-shell pickguard, and Black with a tortoise-shell pickguard.
I own a PRS S2 Vela and it has both those pickup types – minus all the added switching options – and it really is a great little guitar. The pickups are quite unique, but still manage to cover a lot of bases. In my opinion, these S2 Studio models are definitely worth checking out. And remember, these models will be available only in Europe.
