In a fascinating video, Jeremy Blake disconnects from normal space and reality to become both the moon and a junior time wizard. Through a bizarre interaction that has something to do with werewolves and enjoying a whole lot of clock, we discover that a module by the name of Pet Rock has a unique connection to both the phase and mood of the moon.

Pet Rock is a generator of rhythms. It takes in a couple of clocks and derives an output trigger by sort of deciding whether it fancies it or not. Firstly, it can be a composite rhythm or secondly, split into two separate rhythms. The outcomes are influenced by the days of the week and the status of the moon. The idea is that each day will produce differently unique rhythms influenced by the changing phase of the moon. Just to reinforce the point that each day has a different rhythm, meaning that for 24 hours, the pattern will be the same. Every Pet Rock module follows the same journey of the moon and so will produce the same pattern as all the others every day.

It’s a wonderfully weird concept of long-form modulation. And putting something in place that’s not going to obey you no matter how much you beg.

Monthly modulations

So, what about this “mood” business? The circular window at the top lights up in different colours to indicate the moon’s mood. The mood affects the style of rhythm being produced. The mood changes with each new moon, so you have a month to bathe in a certain vibe.

As the website puts it.

Keep in mind this module is less about some sort of literal ‘translation’ between the phase of the moon and a generated rhythm, and more about anchoring part of your creation process to a very slowly changing physical phenomenon, exploring a very direct continuity with something completely outside of the technology itself.

Pet Rock was designed by Jonah Senzel. He describes it as a rhymic WORDLE. So at midnight, you get a new rhythm to explore, puzzle over and experiment with. If you have the time for month-long modulations and want to wake up to a new rhythm every day, then Pet Rock is undoubtedly for you.

Now, sit back and enjoy Jeremy’s spectacular unhinging.
