Panama Guitars’ new Fuego 15 X head: More gain, small price
Panama Guitars are based in, perhaps surprisingly, Panama and don’t, in fact, sell guitars; they’re specialised in amplifiers, cabs and drivers. The Fuego series is their ‘hard-and-heavy’, metal-focussed amp range. This new updated, 15-Watt version of the Fuego head has more gain than its predecessor, but has a similarly affordable price tag.
The company says the amp “is designed to deliver rock and metal tones that rival boutique amplifiers at a very affordable price”. This new model has features like a preamp out and a power amp input, giving it lots of flexibility for studio use. Also provided are an effects loop with a bypass function and three speaker outputs on 4, 8 and 16 ohms. All these options certainly do seem to make for an amp that’s good value for money.
The main preamp runs from ECC83 valves, with the power amp section using a pair of EL84s. The Fuego X has two foot-switchable channels, one marked ‘Clean’ and the other ‘Dirty’. Each features its own controls for Gain, Treble, Middle, Bass, and Master Volume, so the EQ section isn’t shared. The Bright switch is another plus. The casing is made from Spanish Cedar and Mangowood, and all the Fuego series amps are hand-built in Panama and finished in two-tone Antique Graphite and Scarlet tolex.
Aimed at giving you a lot of amplifier for your money, it certainly is at the more affordable end of the market. Pre-orders are open now, although there are no audio demos are available as yet, so I have put a link to its predecessor which, allegedly, has a bit less gain than this new ‘X’ version.
