The Circuit Rhythm is finally here and will turn samples into stellar tracks with built-in recording, performance effects and on-the-go capabilities.
We’ve learned a few things about the Circuit Rhythm since it was first leaked at the end of 2020, but only now do we have the full and official picture.
Circuit Rhythm is an 8-track sampling groove machine with pitching and slicing capabilities. It enjoys things like patterns, probability, resampling and sound sculpting. Each track has its own 32-step pattern sequencer chainable for up to 256 steps with quantisation or micro-stepped swing for that human feel. The grid of 32 pads can either be a melodic keyboard or drum pads depending on how you want to handle your sample track. The 8 rotary knobs give you macro tweaks over various sample parameters. And all of it runs through a DJ-style high and low pass filter for those performance cuts.
Turning samples into beats
It’s designed for quick and easy sampling direct to tracks from the audio inputs where they say you can turn those samples into killer beats. Circuit Rhythm comes with 8 banks of samples ready to go. The first 6 contain 16 sample drum kits with 12 percussion sounds and 4 melodic. Bank 7 has additional melodic and harmonic sounds and Bank 8 has a combination of melodic loops and drum breaks.
Although each track is monophonic you can assign different samples to different steps within a track using Sample Flip. This is slightly different to sample slicing where you can split a single sample across up to 16 pads to create your own patterned loops. Samples can be triggered as one-shot, looped or gated samples that are held as long as the note is down. You can also reverse them and create choke groups.
Patterns can have a life of their own with per-step probability and Mutating shuffling. You can mess about with pattern chains and change the order on the fly or let them come randomly as you react to your evolving production.
You can also get groovy with the performance-focused Grid FX with things like Beat Repeat, Vinyl Simulation, Gater, Auto-filter and Reverser which you can drop onto tracks at the press of a pad.
On the back you get MIDI In/Out/Thru on classic sockets, analogue sync out, line, headphones and USB. Circuit Rhythm is also very portable with a built-in rechargeable battery and microSD card for storage.
So there’s a lot of stuff going on the Circuit Rhythm and with a tried and tested workflow it should fit nicely onto the desktop of any sample hungry beat producer. I’m looking forward to seeing it in action. The pricing is GBP 359/EUR 389/USD 399.
