Tantrum distortion in DAW

Developer Creative Intent has announced a follow-up to its distortion plug-in, Temper. Aptly titled Tantrum, the effect has an interesting structure that’s likely to deliver bold-sounding results.

Building on the phase distortion algorithm from Temper, Tantrum is loaded with two distortion stages. First comes a waveshaping stage with five shapes that span tape saturation through super-pointy foldback distortion. Waveshaping is the most aggressive, unabashedly digital-sounding distortion invented by mankind, so we’re glad to have this beast on board.

The second stage is a “completely redesigned” phase modulation distortion which takes the input signal through a stereo delay and modulates the distorted signal’s phase. Not your usual distortion flavor, that’s for sure!

It does help that Tantrum looks great, offering two kinds of visualization and an interactive pad for adjusting the signal shape. The controls are sparse and simple so getting around this inventive plug-in should be a breeze.

We suggest trying out the demo to see if Tantrum can deliver the teeth and grit you are after. It has the following restrictions — periodic white noise fades in after two minutes, and preset saving is disabled. It’s otherwise unlimited.

Price and availability

Priced USD 50, Tantrum is available in 32- and 64-bit VST2/VST3 formats for Windows and AU/VST2/VST3 formats for macOS. That’s an okay price for a competently designed distortion plug-in.
