Modular guru DivKid hosts an online edition of the annual Leeds Modular Meets this Sunday 23rd August where there will be performances, new music, gear and teacakes.
This is one of the most popular modular events of the year and in recent years has been hosted at the Belgrave Music Hall & Canteen in Leeds. They pack in a whole boatload of modular manufacturers with racks out for you to have a play on and to discuss the finer points of control voltage and modulation with the people who make the modules. The event is peppered with extraordinary modular performances from the stage in the same room so you don’t have any choice but to stop and enjoy the spectacle and skull throbbing noise. And then there’s the much-anticipated raffle of donated modular gear where I never win anything.
Those visceral elements will be missed but we make do with what we can.
This year rather than just let the event pass by DivKid is taking it online for a day of modular content. The focus appears to be centred around performance and making music live with modular. There will be music from the likes of Bit Loader, Bluewolfse7en, Radek Rudnicki, tIB, Vile Electrodes, Ebcidic, Rob Hordijk, Throbbing Gristle (Chris Carter), Scanner, d’Voxx, Ross Barradell, Ian Boddy, Nigel Mullaney, Owen Canivet, Finlay Shakespeare, Richard Quirk, Divkid, Jethro Bagust Matthew Shaw… and possibly more. And then the event will finish off with a round-table panel talk.
It all kicks off at 3pm on Sunday 23rd August on YouTube but of course, you can rewatch it at any time. It’s an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the music of some of the finest and diverse modular performers. I wonder if they are still doing the raffle?
