Mesa Boogie 90s Dual Rectifier Standard: A High Gain Beast
Another 1990s Mesa reissued
The new 90s Dual Rectifier is the latest reissue from Mesa Boogie, aimed squarely at players who need volume, a tight low end, and plenty of gain.

Mesa Boogie
Now that Gibson owns Mesa Boogie, we have seen a slew of reissue models, and now it is the turn of the 90s Dual Rectifier. The original amp heads were released in 1992 and were all about high-gain, hard-rock tones.
I can remember that everywhere you looked in the ’90s, there was a Rectifier of some description either on stage or in the studio. That diamond‑plate front panel became a calling card for many bands, and you’d often see banks of these on stages.
Voices
These reissues follow the same formula as the originals, so expect the Vintage/Orange and Modern/Red voices. Plus, the Channel Style/Cloning allows for each channel to clone the voicing of the other channel.
100 Watt Beast
At 100 watts Class A/B and powered by four Mesa 6L6 power amp tubes (or you can use EL34s via Bias Select), plus five 12AX7 preamp tubes and a pair of 5U4 rectifier tubes, there is a lot of gain on tap. Apparently, they have improved the cleans, but I cannot see anyone really using the clean channel with these amps.
Then you have the switchable Tube or Silicon Diode Rectification, which offers either a spongey sag or a tight character. Finally, the BOLD/SPONGY Variac switch offers a voltage‑dependent feel and harmonic bloom.
Essentially, if you like that high-gain, crunch, and chug, these amps are designed to deliver. They have independent Gain, Treble, Middle, Bass, Presence, and Master controls for each channel, and external footswitching is available for Channel Switching and the built-in FX Loop.
Who is it for?
These reissues of 100-watt high-gain tube amps are going to appeal to a very small section of guitarists. Most players cannot get them up to stage volume and are probably getting their high-gain tones from more modern amps, either virtual, modeled, or with much more manageable, smaller output wattages.
