Roland FP-40: A New Generation of Compact Digital Piano
The new Roland FP-40 digital piano boasts a high-quality sound engine, improved speakers, and deep integration with the Roland Piano Sphere App.

The Roland FP-40 replaces the successful FP-30, which had begun to show its age ten years after its release. The new FP-40 carries on the same successful concept: the compact digital piano is portable enough to travel with you to gigs and rehearsals, yet it also makes a great instrument for practice at home. You can put it on a standard keyboard stand, or add the optional KSF-40 stand and KPD-70 pedal unit to turn it into a proper home piano.
While the FP-30 used Roland’s older SuperNATURAL sound engine, the FP-40 is equipped with the new Piano Reality engine derived from the manufacturer’s top-of-the-line digital grand pianos. The engine combines samples with physical modeling to reproduce the finest details and dynamics of an acoustic instrument. Of the 305 included sounds, 40 are selectable directly from the front panel, while others are only accessible via the Roland Piano App. The app also lets you adjust many advanced parameters such as string, damper, and cabinet resonance, temperament, and lid opening. Compared to the FP-30, the polyphony has doubled to 256 voices.
Like the predecessor, the FP-40 is equipped with the PHA-4 Standard hammer-action keybed with three sensors per key, escapement, and an Ivory Feel coating. The speaker system has been improved to offer better spatial imaging and depth.
Roland Piano Sphere
The FP-40 comes with Roland’s new Piano Sphere app, which was developed in collaboration with the Skoove online music school. The app integrates seamlessly with the piano; there’s even a dedicated button that interacts with the app and offers instant feedback. Piano Sphere includes an extensive, expandable library of songs and step-by-step lessons. Based on your level of playing and your musical preference, Piano Sphere creates a personal practice plan to keep you motivated. As the FP-40 is compatible with headset microphones, it also offers everything you need for online lessons and live streaming.
The FP-40 connects to your mobile device or computer via Bluetooth (MIDI and audio). It’s also Roland’s first digital piano with built-in WiFi connectivity. In addition, the FP-40 offers a stereo output, a headphone/headset jack, two USB connectors (USB-C for MIDI and audio/USB-A for memory), and two pedal jacks.
