The new Mercuriall Audio Greed Smasher plug-in is a software version of the Mesa Grid Slammer overdrive pedal that runs in your DAW. But how close is it to the real thing and how does this Russian software developer manage to make so many great free plug-ins?
This latest recreation from Mercuriall Audio is completely free, so you haven’t got anything to lose by downloading it and giving it a try yourself. The plug-in is based upon a ‘precisely modelled’ circuit, so they have done their best to make it as accurate as possible.
Regardless of whether it sounds similar to the original, you cannot really complain when it is being given away for nothing. I will say that I think a lot of the Mercuriall Audio plug-ins are actually really well written and so I have high hopes for this one.
Available for both Mac and PC, you can run it within a DAW using the VST, AU and AAX formats. Got to be worth a few minutes of your time at the very least, I reckon.
Give it a whirl and let us know what you think in the comments section below. Or if you are really too lazy to download it yourself, then check out the demo video below which ReaperTV put up on YouTube, as it gives an honest overview of the plug-in.
I’ve already downloaded it onto my Mac and will be giving it a good going over the next few weeks in Logic X. My first impressions are very positive and it looks like Mercuriall Audio have done a sterling job with this new plug-in. They have a few amazing pieces of free software which I have written about before and so would urge you to check those as well.
