The new Plugin Alliance SPL PQ is a dual five-band parametric mastering EQ based on SPL’s revered high-end PQ mastering hardware. The plug-in uses the Brainworx Tolerance Modeling Technology (TMT) to simulate the hardware’s formidable 120V rail circuitry.

The design of the Plugin Alliance SPL PQ

It may look a little intimidating at first, but each of the 5-bands has the same simple layout which is duplicated over both channels, which are linkable. Although it’s designed for mastering, the included mono version will help you tackle individual instruments like your kick and bass.

All the controls are very precise, to provide the right tools for the decision-making process of mastering audio. One of the PQ’s defining features is proportional Q mode, which makes the bandwidth proportional to the amplitude. This takes the PQ from being a strictly analytical processor and it becomes something far more musical.

The plug-in’s additional features are found mostly within the Brainworx section in the lower region of the interface.

Here you’ll find:

  • Input/Output gain
  • HP/LP filters
  • TMT features
  • Stereo/Mid-Side/Link modes
  • Auto-listen
  • Total Harmonic Distortion
  • Mono-maker
  • Stereo-width
  • Input/Output metering

Furthermore, you get a bunch of artist-designed presets that will quickly give you a taste of what the PQ can do.

Pricing and availability:

The Plugin Alliance SPL PQ runs on macOS 10.11 to 12 with support for Apple Silicon(not AAX) and Windows 8 to 11 as AAX Native, AAX DSP, AAX Audio Suite, AU, VST2, and VST3. You can download the free demo version and a PDF user manual from the website.
