Let’s dive into some of the new features and find out more about what’s new in Dorico 5.

Stage and Space templates

With Stage Space templates, you have a simple interface for saving and recalling your panning and reverb settings per instrument. As you move each instrument around the hemisphere, the placement translates directly to the panning and reverb amount.

Pitch contour emphasis

The natural variations in volume within human music performances are what instantly separates a live recording from one which is electronically generated.

Although the feature is subtle, Dorico’s playback engine analyzes a passage of music and now emulates the way a musician tends to play or sing slightly louder on ascending phrases.

The result is a more realistic overall performance, so it would be interesting to see how your projects from previous versions are interpreted by Dorico 5.

MIDI trigger regions

Another useful addition is MIDI trigger regions, a new way to control instruments that require more sophisticated control.

Apart from Groove Agent SE, which is now included with Dorico 5, plug-ins like TGuitar within Halion Sonic need additional MIDI input to select the particular chord you’re playing.

MIDI trigger regions provide an additional input lane below the music stave, where you can record and edit this information.

There is a range of other interesting features including Scrub playback, Live editing, Multiple item creation, advanced Instrument editing, and MusicXML import and export. Overall, it looks like a considerable update from the previous version of the software.
