Glitchmachines Cataract 2.0: sound design plug-in goes mad insane
Glitchy, complicated, and you’ll love every minute of it. That’s the Glitchmachines plug-ins experience. Cataract is a “segmented multiplexer” which I’d rather call “mutant sample slicer” because it captures the essence. The plug-in offers an arsenal of sample scanners with integrated effects and a global parameter sequencer to step-sequence nearly all parameters. Cataract 2.0 is a total overhaul with new additions, further refinements, and a streamlining user interface. Let’s dig into it…
Glitchmachines Cataract 2.0
Cataract’s many facilities include a pair of Sample Scanners, X-MOD Morpher, Global Parameter Sequencer, Scan Sequencers, Effects Sequencers, Effects & Dynamics Processors, LFOs, Global Randomizer, a factory bank of readily available sample fodder, and 100 presets to get going with. The task: sequence the sample players and processors into whatever hyper glitch chaos feels best for the occasion.
Unlike sample slicers that traditionally follow markers placed along the waveform, Cataract syncs to the DAW tempo and dynamically scans segments of up to 4 audio files loaded in 2 scanners. The segments are then spread across the timeline and manipulated by the built-in modulators, sequencers, and effects. The final stage is where you mix and fade between the 2 scanner outputs.
Speaking of fades, the Crossfade knob can be modulated from a dedicated LFO, DAW-automated, and sequenced from the Cataract Parameter Sequence. This is how simple crossfading becomes morphing to yield even more complex sounds.
To sum up everything new in Cataract 2.0, it’s native Apple Silicon support, redesigned & scalable interface, new FX and Sequencer modules, new global randomizer, new factory samples, new presets, and minute refinements. That’s everything worthy of a major update and then some!
