New limited run of 100 models to celebrate the Heartbreakers and Wildflowers guitarist/songwriter
This limited run of the new Gibson Tom Petty SJ-200 Wildflower acoustic will see only 100 models made. But if you’re interested in grabbing one for yourself you better have some spare cash lying around as, at $9999 each, they aren’t exactly cheap!
Gibson Tom Petty SJ-200 Wildflower
The Gibson Custom Shop Tom Petty SJ-200 Wildflower model features a AAA Sitka spruce top, ‘highly figured’ quilted maple back and sides, and a flamed maple neck. And, in case you hadn’t noticed, a MASSIVE pickguard. Elsewhere you get a set of gold Grover Imperial Tuners and an LR Baggs VTC under-saddle pickup with soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls.

Tom Petty used an SJ-200 model whilst writing and recording Wildflowers, which is where the model gets its name from. He described the guitar’s sound character as the “big jangle” which, for a jumbo sized acoustic, is probably about right. On the front of the headstock you’ll find the Wildflower logo in Mother-of-Pearl. And on the back is a “You belong among the Wildflowers” decal . Petty’s signature is engraved on that massive double pickguard.
His daughter Adriana Petty was also involved in the project. So it is both a labour of love and a nice tribute for fans worldwide.
“It is so incredible to see the SJ-200 design our Dad worked on so long ago, lovingly brought to fruition with his long-time guitar tech and friend Alan Weidel and the craftsmen and women at Gibson guitars. Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free
The release coincides with the Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free documentary film, and the Wildflowers & All The Rest, out on 16 April, which has 25 songs from the Wildflowers sessions, produced by Petty with Rick Rubin and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell.
