This Gibson Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V is a recreation of the guitar many Metallica fans will associate with the lead guitarist’s early years with the band. 200 of the guitars will be produced at $14,999 each!

Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V

The Gibson Custom Shop Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V is based on the guitar that appeared on Metallica’s first five albums Kill ’Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, …And Justice for All and The Black Album.

A fan favourite for sure and one most will associate with Hammett.

Specifications

It has a one-piece mahogany body in a nitrocellulose Ebony finish paired with a glued-in set neck shaped to match Hammett’s original V profile, and with a 12” radius Indian rosewood fretboard.

The pickups are a pair of Gibson T-Type humbuckers with standard wiring for this model. This gives it two Volumes and one Master Tone. Each uses CTS potentiometers and is wired via a three-way Switchcraft toggle switch.

Hardware includes a stop bar tailpiece, a custom replica bridge, black speed knobs and an aged black switch washer around the output jack. It also features a set of Schaller strap locks and a set of M6 Schaller tuners, which Kirk added to his original V.

Murphy Lab

It is yet another Murphy Lab recreation and has all the nicks and paint chips of Kirks’s original 1979 Flying V and it comes in a special Metallica Museum hard case. The case candy includes case candy, includes a flag, picks and a certificate of authenticity signed by Kirk Hammett.

This is a pretty expensive way to buy a 1979-style Flying V and so it is definitely one for the fans and guitar collectors. It is also not the first time that Gibson has recreated this guitar.

The type of customer for these is the same as the ones that will pay $20k for the recent Greeny Les Paul Standard. I’m sure this Flying V will be a great guitar, but I would rather own an original ’79 Flying V myself and pocket the savings.

MSRP – USD 14999.00

£15k really? A release for hedge fund managers only.
Come on Gibson, join the real world, and release some new models for the majority, not just the rich.

I do think a standard level greeny is coming for those annoyed.

Have to remember Gibson is currently selling everything they build and selling it quickly. The only way to take advantage of demand when you are at production capacity is ti raise prices and someone at Gibson is pushing these extremely high priced collectors as a means of boosting revenue when it was seemingly bottlenecked by production limitations.

If only they had kept Memphis going…

Anyway, no doubt it will be a cool guitar. I’m not sure these will hold value when Covid prices correct and the market returns to normal. These types of models used to exist at ‘normal’ price points to boost sales and offer something interesting when the line up got stale. And I have little doubt Gibson will return to this strategy when the market dictates it.

I have to agree with the author. Buy a vintage 79 and play authentic l
