Gibson is now offering their SG Standard and SG 61 Standard in its Custom Color range. Adding six new finishes to the popular US-made models and giving guitarists something other than Cherry and Black as finish options.
Gibson SG Custom Color
The new Gibson Custom Color models have now added the SG Standard and SG Standard 61 to the lineup. Making for some more interesting finish choices for the poplar solid body design.
They follow on from the recent Les Paul Standard models in the Custom Color series.
The new colours available include Silver Mist, Classic White, Translucent Teal, TV Yellow, Pelham Blue Burst, and Cardinal Red Burst.
SG Standard vs 61 Standard
First up, the SG Standard features a rounded profile mahogany neck and 490R and 490T Alnico 2 humbucking pickups. Plus, the long tenon 19th fret neck joint adds to the overall tone of this model and the famous larger ‘batwing’ pickguard.
Next up is the SG “61 Standard which features a SlimTaper mahogany neck and a pair of 60s Burstbucker humbucker pickups. This model has the smaller 5-ply teardrop pickguard and a 22nd fret neck joint.
Availability
It is looking as though some of the models are not yet available, as the main Gibson site states that a lot of the colours are currently pre-order. Though Thomann has the Silver Mist versions in stock now.
Overall, though I like having some new colour options for the SG as it is a great guitar, and not everyone wants a Cherry or Black finish. Gibson occasionally has done white, natural, and burst finishes, so this splash of colour is a lot more interesting.
