Fender Japan is celebrating its 75-year anniversary this year with a myriad of releases, including these new Limited Edition Noir 2021 Stratocaster and Telecaster models. We saw a Jazzmaster and a Precision Bass in this colour scheme on Fender Japan’s Instagram back in January, but now it looks like European buyers will be able to order the blacked-out Strat and Tele first.

Black is Back!

Some of you may be thinking, “Hang on, haven’t we seen these before?” Yes! Fender first launched these Noir models back in 2017 with a Mexican-made limited run. It’s good to see these models back in a MIJ version, as Fender Japan models are often seen as offering higher quality compared to the instruments made in Mexico. We hope these will be decent versions of the attractive Noir models.

None more black

Now to the specifications! You’ll be getting a basswood body along with a maple U-shape neck and a rosewood fretboard. All the models in this series are finished in black finished a red pinstripe around the black pickguard and vibrato cover on the back. The headstock has red lettering and the guitar features blacked-out hardware. The look is 1980s, think Knight Rider! In fact,m they also remind me a little of the recent Manson limited edition KR-1 models.

The Fender Tax?

Overall, these new MIJ Noir Stratocaster and Telecaster do look very good, and I love a U-shape neck! Again, though, the price looks to be pretty high on this run. They come in at nearly double the price of the Mexican 2017 version that was listed at £539. The prices here are closer to £1025 apiece, which is quite a jump in price.
