New in the line of analogue Eurorack modules from Expert Sleepers comes the clever and nicely overdriven Persephone VCA.
Expert Sleepers is really nailing it with these analogue modules. They’ve recently released the Ivo resonant low pass filter, the Lorelei VCO with waveshaping, and Beatrix phaser showing that Expert Sleepers are about much more than that Disting thing and digital routing modules. Persephone is carrying on the nailing of modules with a rather tasty looking take on the VCA.
VCAs are the mainstay of a modular synth providing CV controllable level management over both audio and voltage. However, the focus of Persephone is on the audio side of voltage-controlled amplification and offers some overdrive, saturation and distortion via some discrete JFET gain circuitry. One other nice feature is the ability to detect zero-crossing points and so prevents those clicks and pops you can get with very fast envelopes. This means you can use a Gate straight into the CV input without having to add an envelope just to smooth that edge off. Check out the effect in the video – it’s rather brilliant.
Persephone has a pair of audio inputs for mixing signals. You can then juggle the Pre and Post knobs to bring in the overdrive while keeping the output level under control. The Asymmetry switch gives you another flavour or character to the saturation.
This is quite an exciting module for a VCA and I’m trying to work out how I can fit four of them in my case. Persephone is available now for £159.
