EVH Kramer

Kramer CO176 is the first rear-loaded striped guitar that Eddie Van Halen received from Kramer luthier Paul Unkert.

The body is made from poplar wood and Eddie would play this one between ’83 and ’84, until Alan Holdsworth introduced him to basswood bodied guitars.

It is a 22 fret, bolt-on maple neck with an Unk stamp on the heel, and comes fitted with a single double-coil Seymour Duncan humbucker pickup,  one volume knob and a Floyd Rose locking bridge.

This guitar also has screw holes on the back of the body for connecting his patented support system for playing piano-style and is according to Sothebys the first guitar to have been used with that system.

Provenance

The Kramer was gifted by Eddie Van Halen to Gregg Emerson around 1990. Emerson was the Van Halen’s drum tech and it was a retirement present from Eddie to him.

It then was given to Emerson’s nephew, who then sold it to Neal’s Music in Huntington Beach, California. Neal’s Music then sold the instrument to its current owner.

This is a very important part of guitar history, as so many young guitarists would have seen it in that famous video, as Eddie ripped his guitar solo all over it.

It comes with a letter of provenance by Paul Unkert. Along with  a signed photograph from Eddie Van Halen, its original hard case with tour and a Warner Brothers tag. Plus, the straight jacket and white gloves worn by Van Halen in the video.

The Sotheby’s auction closes on Tuesday, April 18 2023

Kramer

Even now in 2023 the single humbucker Kramer models are making a comeback. Though they are now owned by Gibson and are essentially budget instruments.

Though many EVH fans will probably opt for the Frankenstein-style models from Eddie’s own company EVH. Which he set up with Fender and continues to carry his name.
