The Cranborne Audio Bricklane MC4 gives you not two but four channels of PWM compression, all controllable from the comfort of your DAW.

This time last year, Cranborne Audio introduced the Bricklane 500 PWM compressor module for the 500-series format at NAMM. Today, the UK manufacturer has followed up with a monster four-channel rackmount version with an expanded feature set and digital recall.

PWM compression became popular through the iconic design of the famous PYE compressor, used at London’s famous Olympic Studio. Apart from its pleasing sound, engineers loved the PYE for the way it glued tracks together organically and cohesively. In today’s musical landscape, however, PWM compression has made a resurgence due to its flexibility, and Cranborne Audio has certainly provided the platform with the Bricklane MC4.

More Information

The MC4’s four channels each have individual sidechain inputs and insert paths, allowing you to route them flexibly with your patchbay. In addition, you can use them for mono, stereo, or mid-side processing with a selection of operating modes. With the internal Series mode, you can chain channels together to create the ultimate peak limiter and glue compressor chain.

What’s more, the MC4 has a Dual-Band mode, which divides the frequency range into two parts over two channels for mono processing or all four channels for stereo. Meanwhile, there is also a De-esser mode with an analogue lookahead feature to target and react to problematic areas of the frequency spectrum.

To take on any application, there are six different compression modes and a Stress Control, which dynamically introduces harmonics depending on the compression mode selected. One unique feature is the ENIGMA function that gives you deep control of the compressor behaviour, while the plugin interface lets you manage and recall all parameters from your DAW.
