The Cloud 44 Passive Ribbon Mic is American manufacturer Cloud Microphones’s passive version of its 44-A ribbon microphone. Cloud is best known as the maker of the Cloudlifter Mic Activator, which powers gain-hungry SM7Bs across streaming and podcast setups worldwide. The 44-A and 44 Passive replicate the vintage RCA Type 44 ribbon mic from the 1930s. Here’s more about the new, passive replica…
Cloud 44 Passive Ribbon Mic
Company founder and self-confessed “ribbon mic fanatic” Roger Cloud describes the 44 replica as a “major labor of love”. Due to overwhelming requests, the manufacturer came to offer a passive version The 44’s ribbon motor design remains true to the original spec from the 1930s. The microphone is hand-assembled in the United States with modern materials and components. The outcome is a faithful reproduction of the RCA 44 but with the kind of robustness and clarity you’d expect from a modern-day mic. Sounds like a winning combo!
The Cloud 44 is notable for its Voice/Music response curves switching. The Voice setting attenuates the low frequency proximity effect, rumble, and vibration. The Music setting toggles the full bass response.
Lacking active circuitry, the passive ribbon requires plenty of gain on tap. Making it easier to start out of the box, each Cloud 44 is bundled with a Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator in a matching “midnight edition” black finish. Using phantom power from your preamp, the unit provides an additional +25 dB of gain for dynamic and passive microphones. It features patented discrete JFET circuitry to best preserves the microphone’s natural sound while keeping the direct audio path uncolored by components (transformers, capacitors, and resistors).
A shock mount is also included.
