Experimental guitar builder extraordinaire Burls Art has teamed up with an old school friend to make a Coffee Bean Guitar. The guitar is built from scratch, using 5000 coffee beans for the body! As usual, the build video is a great way to while away a few minutes.

Smell the full roasted tone

Burls Art has made some pretty weird and wonderful guitars the last few years. His modus operandi is to use epoxy resin to form a body made from another object or material. In the past, he used pre-made necks and bolted them onto his guitars, but nowadays he makes everything himself, including the necks. His previous guitars have been made from colouring pencils, paper, Styrofoam and even Himalayan salt.

Copper Coffee

This guitar contains around 5000 coffee beans given to him by a friend from his school days who now owns a company called Copper Coffee. This is important to note, as Burls Art has made all the guitar’s accents, including the binding and headstock fascia using either copper-coloured aluminium (for the binding) or sheets of copper. The result is a rich brown and copper guitar that looks very well executed.

Explorer

The modern Explorer style body shape was formed by sealing the coffee beans in epoxy and then cutting the shape out. But what I really love is that he gave the top a matte finish. This lets the coffee smell percolate into the environment. Apparently, his whole workshop smells of roasted coffee! He also uses epoxy mixed with copper powder to fill in some of the gaps and for the Copper Coffee logo at the 12th fret.

A Smooth Watch

As always with Burls Art, the video is very down to earth and lets you see all the processes, with commentary explaining what he’s up to. It’s a nice, easy watch. I just wish I could smell the coffee as he’s making it! The roasted coffee beans apparently won’t decompose and should hold their shape over the years, so it should last a long time.
