Prominent audio developer Baby Audio released a new plug-in called TAIP. It’s a virtual tape machine that can sort of think alongside you and your audio. Sounds exciting! Anyway, there’s an algorithm that uses artificial intelligence to eek out the subtlest nuances of analog circuits. It’s probably some sort of machine learning at play – it has been quite en vogue in all sorts of circuit modelling lately. The technology helps the plug-in generate convincing tape saturation and compression for your vocal and instrument tracks. It’s Baby Audio, so better grab the demo version for testing and jump on the 40% introductory discount, if you fancy.

Baby Audio TAIP – spinnin’ them AI tapes

TAIP is the latest product from BABY Audio – a virtual tape machine that uses artificial intelligence to make the plug-in sound more lively and authentic. In typical BABY Audio fashion, the effect can be set very easily and intuitively. So getting usable results is not much of a challenge.

That aside, the user interface comes in three selectable shades of black, gray, and white. You can freely scale its size, too. In addition to the obligatory Dry / Wet mix control, you can control the self-explanatory parameters Wear, Noise, Glue, Presence, Hi-Shape, and Lo-Shape. The input level can be set to Normal or Hot. The two tape reels visually indicate the strength of the effect.

While virtual tape machine plug-ins are way too many to care for at this point, I always trust BABY Audio to offer something intriguing that’s easy to use and sounds great. When you bring quality to the table, there’s always room for more.

Artificial intelligence IS standard DSP, it’s just another way to obtain the algorithm behind the sound.

In *theory* it should be simpler to write good algorithm with machine learning and it *might* result in slightly better sounding stuffs…

In practice… there are no way to distinguish one from the other. Also machine learning isn’t magical : if the input data or the learning process is crap, the result will suck
