There are times when getting the fun back into programming beats seems impossible. You’ve previewed all your loops and drum kits and other bits and pieces, and none of it is doing anything for you. That’s when you need to sample the sound of a piano being dropped from twenty feet.

Andrew Huang, of course, already has a huge fan base, and we’ve written about his unique, engaging style before. In this video, he uses the sound of a piano being dropped from a crane twenty feet in the air to make a Burial-style beat. And makes it look easy, like anyone could do it. Which is exactly the point – you can. In theory…

The sound of the piano was provided by Youtuber Simon The Magpie. Andrew even sampled in vocals he got from his followers, and added those to the track. It’s all very collaborative, open, personable and refreshing. It’s also very far away from the last time I tried to spend a couple of hours making a new song from scratch. That ended in creative failure after hours of stepping through synth plug-in presets, fiddling about with compressor settings and hacking out uninspired guitar riffs I later realised were clichéd dross. Andrew makes it look so easy to be spontaneous, inventive and intuitively musical, when many of us know that song creation can be draining and frustrating (sometimes, at least).

Anyway, here’s the video. Enjoy.
