Colossus Double

I’ve seen the original Colossus close up and it’s an impressive and intimidating piece of electronic music engineering. The Colossus Double is a feast to behold. I mean look at it, it’s a whole other ball game, a different universe and a whole other thing.

The original is now known as the AS100 Classic. Inspired by the EMS Synthi 100 but not based upon it Colossus features 100% analogue voice and modulation circuits. It throbs with the power of 12 multi-waveform oscillators, noise, randomisation and precision multi-turn vernier dials. Each of the 8 filters has its own serial VCA and there are 4 more for general use and purpose. For modulation, there are 2 additional LFOs and 4 ADSRs, 2 ring modulators, 2 slew generators and another 4 loopable envelopes. It has a sequencer, 10 channel stereo mixer, joysticks and a massive pin matrix.

Double or Slim?

It’s a ridiculous synthesizer built like it’s the 1970s but with modern and more reliable parts. How much more ridiculous can it get? Well, how about we stick another right on top? That’s right, Analogue Solutions has developed the Colossus AS200 Slim. This is the same as the classic but reworked from a console into a cabinet form, giving it the neat ability to sit right on top of the AS100 to form the towering Colossus Double.

The Slim does lose the touch keyboards and the pin matrixes are smaller and not internally wired. Although that could be a good thing! It does have a bigger mixer though. The Slim can be bought on its own if you need to save a bit of desk space, but really you’re going to get it at the same time as the Classic or as an upgrade down the line.

More Information

How much?

If you need to ask how much it would cost then it’s going to be well out of your league. But just for fun, I can tell you that the AS100 Classic is £26,500, the AS200 Slim is £23,500 whereas the Colossus Double is a steal at exactly those two prices added together and excludes tax and delivery. Analogue Solutions do take Bitcoin, so there’s that.
