AIR Music Technology has teamed up with Akai Professional and Alesis to produce a meaty software drum synthesizer. Drum Synth 500 has 500 drum sounds, 500 drum samples, 500 MIDI drum loops and 50 kits. Let’s check it out.
Drum Synth 500
You get 8 channels of drums in a fully programmable 500 series modular style. They are organised into Kick, Snare, Clap, Hats, Toms and Percussion as expected and then they tag on 2 sampler channels on the end. The controls are all out there on the table and pretty comprehensive. The Kick and Snare are both analog based and so have tuning, decay and pitch envelopes along with click, noise and drive. The Clap and Hats are noise based and you have control over the gate and colour, EQ and timbre. The Toms and Percussion are FM based with 2 operator envelopes. The 2 Sampler channels have forward/reverse controls along with pitch and amp envelopes and yes, you can load your own samples into these channels.
You’ve then got a meaty processing section with distortion, bit crushing and decimation, a choice of 5 filters and compression. Then to the side of the interface you’ll find the send effects section with two types of reverb and delay. The effects are accessed from send controls on each channel. And finally, you get a master section with more reverb, more saturation, delay, compression and a “Kill EQ” circuit.
There’s a lot of potential for sound and drum design within the comprehensive bank of parameters. There’s also a randomisation button for generating instant new sounds and ideas. It also integrates MPC Full Level and Note Repeat for each instrument channel.
It sounds pretty convincing I have to say.
Drum Synth 500 is available for a short time for $99.99 and will run standalone or as a VST/AU/AAX plugin on both MacOS and Windows.
