Freakshow’s Mishby has to be the strangest tape sim out there
Developer Freakshow Industries released another strange plug-in – this time, a tape emulation plug-in called Mishby. The company is known for its are super weird, quirkily cool plug-ins. That, according to the developer, should never be used or installed. You don’t even have to pay money for the software. You can officially ‘steal’ their plug-ins as pirated copies right from the website!

Attention, the demo video shown below is quite a trip and not for the faint-hearted! Freaky stuff aside, Mishby is actually a versatile tape machine emulation. It has everything you’d expect in terms of functionality, through the user interface eschews boring reels for… well, see for yourself (tentacles)! You can adjust the strength of the effect, alongside parameters such as quality, distortion, noise and “xxxxx” controller . Then there is a section for synchronism fluctuations. Here you can edit bass, mids and highs and set an LFO in motion. Last but not least, a random generator (with probability ) can cause even more unrest. It’s a like a tape machine on coke.
There are six “faces” intended to express the degree of destruction of the sound material. These are (from weak to extreme): Legendary Vaporware, Parasite Guaranteed, The Tentacle, Anti-User Interface, Price Distortion and Forbidden Science. This plug-in is definitely a feast for sound designers! And if you want to burden yourself with guilt, you can officially steal the virtual effects device. Without any additional costs. Price and availability
Freakshow Industries’ Mishby is available from the manufacturer’s website at a price of USD 50. But, if you are so inclined, you can officially steal the software free of charge as a “pirated copy”. Or set a price yourself to support the developer. The plug-in runs on Mac OSX 10.10.5 or higher and Windows 7 or higher in VST, VST3, AU and AAX 64 bit formats.
