Multieffects plugins are becoming increasingly common, but how many of them fit into a functional music production or mixing workflow? Rankin Audio has thought about this in the creation of Henchman, and rather than providing an endless range of effects that end up underused, this plugin is a tool to make the elements stand out in the mix.

Although it can precisely target different parts of the frequency range, Henchman’s workflow is decidedly straightforward. With the main visualizer, you can get a reading of the processing on each of the three bands, and you can adjust the crossover points that determine their respective frequency ranges.

More Information

The first thing you’ll notice is that the midrange and high bands are slightly different from the low band. This is because the type of processing we do on low frequencies is quite different from the rest of the spectrum and is often done in mono. This means that the mid and high bands give you access to a range of 15 effects, while the low band has a specialized module for introducing bass harmonics.

This lets you add even, odd, or mixed harmonics, which is particularly useful for modern low-end driven styles of music like Pop, Hip-Hop, and EDM that use plenty of sub frequencies but still require translation onto small speakers and AirPods. Meanwhile, each independent band has a compressor, as well as mute, solo, and bypass buttons.

With the midrange and high bands, we can also spread the processing using the mid-side controls, so you can target specific areas of the input signal or direct the processing in different ways when using Henchman as a parallel effect. Overall, with the inclusion of a global brickwall limiter, Henchman is intended for use on channel groups and master bus, but it can be a powerful tool for shaping individual elements too, especially if you consider that the crossover points can be adjusted with automation.
