Tascam DR-40XP: Professional 32-bit Handheld Recorder
The latest version of Tascam's pocket-sized recorder.
The Tascam DR-40XP is the next evolution of the DR-40X handheld recorder, with a range of improvements across the board, making it more versatile than ever.
Tascam has been making recording more compact and accessible since the late 1970s, with a legacy that evolved from the Portastudio and Ministudio series tape recorders to the DR series digital recorders introduced in 2008.

Although it may look like a similar 4-track recorder and audio interface to the previous version (DR-40X), the DR-40XP has been upgraded in almost every area that counts. For starters, it can now record at 32-bit float bit depth, which adds headroom and makes gain management far more flexible in post-production.
The pair of built-in condenser mics has also been upgraded, with RF shielding that protects them from nearby wireless devices that could introduce noise. These mics can also be adjusted between an AB and XY configuration for different applications. In addition, the onboard mic preamps have also been improved for optimized performance with a wider range of XLR microphones.
This is possible with the variable input gain and -126 dBu input noise rating. Overall, the device has a dynamic range of 112 dB with an improved THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) rating of 0.008% and an audio clocking rating of 10 ppm for increased sync accuracy and stability. The DR-40XP records to microSD cards of up to 512 GB capacity and connects to your laptop via USB-C.
In use, the DR-40XP battery offers up to 30 hours of operating time, and there are some handy features like DSP optimization on the built-in speaker for improved clarity and instant recording activation for a seamless workflow. At $250, it’s certainly a competitive option if you need professional recording on your camera rig or in the palm of your hand.

Still no digital input ?! Why can’t they put AES/EBU or S/PDIF input?
I want to just record the original, not a degraded version through their battery operated analogue preamps with their hissy noise floor added and extra set of D/A and A/D converters. Is it really so hard?
No digital input = no sale for me.
