The Home-Built Guitar Recreated

Fender has closely matched the original guitar built by Tom Morello, and it retains all its quirks. The basic guitar body is alder and painted in Blue Ice Metallic, with “Arm The Homeless” artwork inspired by hippos and the slogan Morello put on his original.

It has a maple neck painted black, a rosewood fretboard, and a hockey stick headstock. This has a 15″ radius fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets.

EMGs

It has an EMG 85 bridge pickup paired with an EMG H in the neck position. There is an individual volume control for each pickup and a master tone control. The three-way pickup selector switch allows for killswitch-like stutters if you turn down one of the volume controls to zero.

No fancy electronics, just active pickups and some basic skills, is how Morello worked his guitar for his stutters. You can read about how to get his sound here in our detailed breakdown.

Gotoh

This model is fitted with a recessed Gotoh GE1996T Series Double-Locking Tremolo, a locking nut, and a set of deluxe cast/sealed locking tuners.

Conclusion

If you are a Rage Against the Machine or Tom Morello fan, then this could be the guitar for you. It is not as subtle as his Soul Power signature guitar, with its graphics, but if you are a fan, you would want them anyway.

It’s interesting to see a guitar with a blank headstock being sold by Fender, so it is pretty unique in that respect. Plus, a disclaimer on Fender’s site has this statement: “The artwork of this product includes a ‘Hammer and Sickle’ symbol that may be restricted or banned in certain jurisdictions.” Which is also interesting for a guitar release.

If I were Fender I wouldn’t put my name on it, either.
