What to do when normal guitars and ordinary musical keys are just too boring? Just leave out a string and and use an open tuning! That seems to be the idea behind the two additional models from the Taylor Jacob Collier 5-String Series. Both the GS Mini and Academy 22 are compact, highly portable acoustic guitars that Taylor developed in collaboration with Collier.

What Makes the Taylor Jacob Collier 5-String Series so Special?

I must admit that I sometimes roll my eyes at Jacob Collier. Sure, 15 Grammy nominations and six Grammy wins speak for themselves, as do sold-out tours. And I love his endless musical enthusiasm. But EVERYTHING has to be more different, more colorful, more special, even with his signature Crocs.

But does missing a string really make writing and playing music so much better and more unusual? Anyways. That’s what the Taylor Jacob Collier 5-String series is all about. Two models have been available since 2021, and today, a GS-Mini and an Academy 22 join them. In addition to the missing string, the tuning is also different: D-A-E-A-D.

Open tunings, much more than missing strings, can be a great source of inspiration. It can be great fun to play the usual chords and develop new melodies in an instant.

What Materials Were Used in the GS Mini and Academy 22?

Apart from the missing string, the Taylor Jacob Collier 5-string series offers proven features in both models. In the GS Mini, the colorful binding around the sound hole is a striking feature. In terms of wood types, its back and sides are made of Sapele, the top is solid Sitka spruce, and the neck is mahogany.

Taylor uses ebony for the fingerboard and bridge, while 20 frets with dot inlays and standard Taylor tuners round off the package. The slightly larger Jacob Collier Academy 22 comes in a Compact Academy Grand Concert body format. Here, the top is made of solid walnut, as are the back and sides.

As with the GS-Mini, Taylor uses mahogany for the neck and ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. Inn addition, this model also comes with a Fishman Presys VT pickup.
