Ernie Ball Music Man and Finnish effects and amplifier manufacturer Darkglass, known for its distortion pedals, have joined forces to create the exceptionally cool DarkRay bass. This unique bass features an integrated Alpha / Omega distortion.

Combining a top-quality bass and a boutique preamp is, on paper at least, a great idea. This new, modern preamplifier from Darkglass was developed especially for the Ernie Ball Music Man DarkRay. The preamp offers three modes with very different sounds: Clean, Alpha and Omega.

Sound familiar? That’s because it’s the name of the two distortion circuits from the Alpha Omega Preamp of the same name. Although now it has been distilled down to fit into the limited space of the electronics compartment of a bass guitar. Both drives are fully accessible via an integrated gain control and a blend control. The end result is a crisp clean, a slight gain, or a brutal fuzz sound. And all this without losing the low frequencies. The luminous LED ring and 3-way switch indicate which mode the bass is set to.

Two Tones
There are two DarkRay versions. The standard version comes in Obsidian Black and will be available internationally. The Granite Stone version, however, is limited to only 100 pieces (88 are still up for grabs at the time of writing) and can only be found in the USA.

I’m sure this new collaboration will get many bass players excited. But I also think that it might cause a few arguments as well. Personally, I quite like it. Both the brands involved have a solid history of making great gig-worthy gear and I hope they do more collaborations in the future.
