Ujam says that synths are difficult and complex machines that no one understands and are offering Usynth as the patronisingly easy alternative.

Usynth

The awesome Usynth promo video from Ujam gives us a 3-second synthesizer history, declares them as mysterious and unfathomable – I mean how could anyone cope with all those real-life knobs and wires – and provides the answer in a software synth designed for the clueless. Usynth is synthesizers done the Ujam way.

So, what do you get? It’s not entirely clear because there are no demos or clear screenshots yet. All they are saying is that there are 3 synths: Euphoria(EDM), Caramel (pads) and 2080 (Synthwave). They look a bit like Reaktor or Kontakt based synths. You get 2 layers per voice, they use Virtual Analog, Wavetable, FM and multisamples, a multi-mode filter, 5-stage envelope, LFOs and a 12-way modulation matrix – that’s all getting a bit complex and scary but, as they say on the website, “why would you care?” Usynth doesn’t need you to understand anything you just play the sounds and move stuff randomly, sorry that’s “intuitively” about the place. They describe it as being a bit like using Instagram filters.

So, synths that come with a bunch of presets ready to go with an easy interface – I am stunned at the level of innovation and wonder why on earth I’ve been wasting my time with these patch cables and signal routing? I must be an idiot, no hang on, I must be a musician – that’s it. There’s nothing wrong with having a bunch of cool sounds wrapped up in an easy to use interface, there are hundreds of software synths out there that do this. I’m objecting to the idea that Ujam has uncovered some new solution for people troubled by synthesis. If they’re good, then they’re good, you don’t need to invent a problem to justify your existence! What you do need is some demos.

Usynth is not available until January but you can preorder blind for $99.83 and say hello to a new universe of creative expression!
