Warm Audio Throne of Tone & Tube Squealer: 2 Classic Overdrives!
Two classic analog overdrives with added extras
Warm Audio has announced not one, but two classic overdrive pedals, the Throne of Tone and the Tube Squealer. These are their take on two very well-known and much-loved drive circuits.
Throne of Tone
First up is the Throne of Tone, and this is based on the Marshall Bluesbreaker-style or King of Tone, dual overdrive. Essentially, two identical overdrives in one pedal, which makes it very flexible. Based on a British overdrive voicing and with low/high gain settings on each side.
The all-analog design uses diodes and premium JRC4580 and TL072 op-amps to create the amp-like overdrive.
Three Modes
This dual design also has three drive modes per side: Boost, Overdrive, and Distortion. The design also features knobs for Volume, Gain, Tone, and Presence for each side of the overdrive. This gives users a lot of control over the two sides.
An external voltage doubler on the back allows it to be set from 9V–18V for more clean headroom if needed. It also has send/return jacks for placing external pedals into the circuit, and it is a true bypass design.
A nice update and relatively affordable dual overdrive, with some useful clipping options. Priced officially at $229, it’s a lot more affordable and has no waiting list, unlike many boutique options.
Tube Squealer
The Tube Squealer is based on the much-loved Ibanez/Maxon overdrive family of Tubescreamers, and this one combines the voicings of the TS808, TS9, and the TS10. They all use asymmetrical clipping, and so this analog design follows that same circuit design.
Updated Extras
Warm Audio has added a pickup-voicing selector so it can be dialled in for either single-coil or humbucking pickups, and a Mix control for blending clean and overdrive signals. Making this TS-style overdrive far more flexible than a standard version.
It also has a voltage boost option, allowing for increased headroom and dynamics. Perfect for any players who want a flexible TS-style overdrive, combining all the voicings of the classic models and more.
The official pricing for this one is $149, excellent value for money, considering it is three overdrive pedals in one.
Verdict
Warm Audio makes some nice versions of classic guitar effects, and these two new overdrive pedals both pack in the features. I like that they are relatively affordable, and they don’t require waiting lists to purchase them.
The Throne of Tone, priced $243/£220/€249, and Tube Squealer, priced $155/£140/€159, are both available at Thomann.
