Undertow FX box: dub it out with saturation, tape echo, phasing & LFO
Developer Psychic Modulation released a pretty rad virtual effects box called Undertow. Undertow is styled as a “beat bending dub box” that’s ready to latch onto any source and make it dub. From saturation to lo-fi sauced with extreme echo and rhythmic modulation, it looks like there’s plenty of fun to be had with this tool.
3 modules to warp audio with
Undertow is sectioned into 3 distinct modules. Tone Booster can boost a frequency of your choice then feed as much of the signal you want into a speaker emulation to achieve a lo-fi telephone effect. The speaker is followed by a saturator with saturation, drive, and dampening controls so you can warm-up or destroy audio at will.
Next comes the Echo Phaser, which is obviously a combination of tape echo and phaser (all-pass delay filter) effects in series. Offering familiar controls, the Echo effect can be synchronized to your project tempo and warble to end and beyond. It can be routed into the phaser with phase and resonance controls, then you can apply a speaker effect so that only mids get affected. The result can be mixed between the Tone Booster and Echo Phaser-processed effects.
Third comes the Beat Bender, a modulation unit that features a tempo-synced LFO with choosable waveforms, trigger options, rate, and the ability to modulate the Tone Booster’s frequency, the Echo Phaser’s essential parameters, and volume amplitude. The Bend Depth control lets you dial in how much modulation you want applied.
With the Beat Bender, you can achieve ducking and pumping effects, feedback gating, pitch warping, modulated phasing, flanging, and even a sense of reverb.
Each FX section has a choice of presets in addition to 128 global presets. There are also randomization controls for each effect, MIDI learn and automation for most parameters, and a preset manager. What a toolkit!
