u-he MELT: Analog Filter with Variable Character
u-he first unveiled the – then still unnamed – prototype of the new module way back at Superbooth 22. More than four years later, MELT is finally available. And if you’re looking for a Eurorack filter that offers both character and versatile connectivity, it’s definitely worth a closer look.
u-he MELT is an analog cascade lowpass filter with an additional bandpass output. For the lowpass, you can choose between three slopes (12/18/24 dB/Oct). To avoid the dreaded bass roll-off at high resonance settings, MELT has a Resonance Compensation switch.
The module’s main event is the Core Temperature knob, which lets you continuously adjust the filter’s character. At lower settings, u-he says the filter behaves relatively politely. Turn up the heat, and the internal headroom is reduced, which causes the interaction between the input signal and the resonance to become increasingly nonlinear. At high settings, the input starts to distort – core meltdown!
Thanks to ample connectivity and some well-thought-out ideas, u-he MELT offers plenty of opportunities for creative patching. The module has no fewer than three audio inputs with an input mixer. Input 1 features a VCA. The lowpass and bandpass outputs are also equipped with VCAs. In addition, MELT has an AUX input (with VCA), which bypasses the filter and is forwarded directly to the outputs. This makes the module really versatile. As the mixer and all the VCAs you need are already built-in, you don’t need a whole lot more to assemble a complete synth voice using MELT.
For modulation, MELT offers two FM inputs with attenuators. FM1 is equipped with an inverter and, you’ve guessed it, a VCA.
u-he MELT is without a doubt a very capable filter module that offers both versatility and room for sonic experimentation. It’s great news that it’s finally available!
