Audio effects developer Tritik has excellent audio manglers among its creations. The Krush plug-in is one of the best bit-crushers I know, and it’s totally free! The rest of the plug-ins have the same minimalist aesthetic and clever thinking behind them. The newest addition is Flaw and its job is making Lo-Fi out of overdrive, filters, modulation, reverb and noise. So it’s not a repeat of Krush, but something rather different that may be perfect for your nostalgia/underground production bin.

Flaw can change your audio quite drastically, but it never gets truly brutal. There are other tools for that – such as the excellent Rift distortion plug-in by Minimal Audio. Flaw makes five individual effect types work together to produce a hazy, lo-fi sound:

  • Modulation Section with waveform and rate controls.
  • Lo-fi Reverb with a pronounced character.
  • Noise Section for all-day tape, vinyl, and crackles.
  • Drive Control for extra crunch and warmth.
  • Analog-modeled HP and LP filters.

The sauce, so to say, is in the modulation section. You can turn it up and adjust speed and oscillation parameters to conjure vibratos and effects similar to wow and flutter. Sometimes a fresh spin on familiar sounds is all that’s needed to make things interesting and Flaw has that. In another example, the LoFi reverb effect with Mix, Size, and Width controls doesn’t sound quite like you’d expect from a reverb – but it’s kind of cool!

The noise section generates those tape, vinyl and crackling artifacts that lend an instant nostalgia kick to any track. Just blend it in subtly to make it sound less predictable. The filter helps that by taming the noise and its amplitude can be controlled by an automatic envelope follower. The filter department has high and low pass controls – no resonance, but you can turn up the Drive to get some bite. The last two controls let you balance between the dry and effected signal.

The combination of these individual effects results in a wide range of sounds. You can watch the videos or download the demo version to get a taste.
