The Technics SL-1200GR2: a next-generation turntable?

With the new Technics SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2 turntables, the popular DJ series gets a facelift and some new improvements aimed at increasing the overall sound quality.
The famous SL-1200 series was first introduced in the early 1970s and has become popular not only with DJs but Hi-Fi enthusiasts and vinyl collectors too.
With that kind of heritage, you can be sure that Technics is drawing from years of research and development when refining and improving this classic turntable design.
Technics SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2
For starters, the direct drive motor has been upgraded, offering even more stability and longevity. This ΔΣ-Drive (Delta-Sigma Drive), reduces vibrations while simultaneously providing a reduction in high harmonics.
Meanwhile, the accuracy of the pickup’s electromagnetic conversion has been improved, which is great news for those who love the experience of using the SL-1200 series without swapping out pickups and tonearms.

In addition, the new series offers compatibility with a wider range of cartridges and a new power supply. Here, there is a reduction of noise, which is further improved by the new absorbent rubber 2-layer construction over the entire design.
The shape of the aluminum die-cast part has also been optimized with the help of simulations, and there are now reinforcing ribs on the back. According to the manufacturer, the damping properties are now twice as high as those of the SL-1200MK5.
Pricing and availability:
The Technics SL-1200GR2 and SL-12120GR2 will be available in stores from December 2023 for $2,199.99 MSRP.
