For over two decades, the Swiss plugin developer, Togu Audio Line, has produced high-quality but affordable software instruments and effects plugins, usually falling within the scope of classic synth and sampler recreations and vintage studio processors.

With so many brands offering their own takes on dynamic EQ plugins, including FabFilter, SSL, and Waves, the TAL EQ is an unexpectedly competitive move. In fact, TAL is the last company I expected to release a dynamic EQ plugin, but I’m here for it all the same.

What looks immediately interesting about the TAL-EQ is its well-designed interface. Although all TAL plugins have intuitive workflows, a dynamic EQ plugin is hard to get right, with so many features to account for. This is something TAL has taken great care over, paying attention to every detail.

Creating new EQ bands is easy, with just a double-click, while dynamic bands can be created with the shift key. Using your mouse wheel to adjust the Q-factor is a neat touch, and you can choose from a range of different filter shapes and slopes to target the exact part of the frequency range you need to.

Dynamic processing is as straightforward as I’ve seen on any plugin, with the ability to trigger the compressor with a sidechain signal, like your kick drum, or you can use the Auto Threshold feature for intuitive adjustments. What’s more, you can set a positive or negative dB range for the dynamics changes to ensure precision.

In addition, each band can be panned to either side of the stereo or assigned to the mid or side channels. This makes the TAL-EQ usable for mastering, as you can really hone in on specific areas of a song and pull out or push back frequencies as required. Overall, the TAL-EQ seems like a worthy competitor at a reasonable price. TAL has a reputation for creating great-sounding plugins, so I’m excited to give this one a try.
