If you’re thinking about exploring modular synthesis, the Grandmother provides a great way in without having to invest in Eurorack housings or individual modules. The architecture is simple, but the creative possibilities are broad enough to ensure both synthesis experts and beginners have equal amounts of fun.

The Grandmother is capable of creating a variety of sounds, from evolving leads and basses to the melodic sequences you can produce with the sequencer and arpeggiator. The built-in spring reverb is a nice touch too.

Wondering what to buy as your first synth? The Monologue is an excellent bassline machine with a built-in sequencer that also combines with Korg’s motion sequencer for interesting groove-based modulation.

It’s easy and fun to use, and the juicy filter produces some very acid-centric results. The onboard memory provides 80 presets and 20 slots for storing user patches, and the overdrive effect is a very cool addition for leads and basses.

The Poly D takes everything you love about the Behringer Model D and puts it in a 4-voice polyphonic format. The controls are in the familiar layout, but there are a few added tweaks like a 32-step sequencer and arpeggiator to make things more fun.

In addition, you have a stereo BBD Juno-style chorus and a distortion effect with tone control. Overall, this is a very versatile instrument with plenty of value for the price.
