Korg releases the NTS-2 multifunctional scope and utility kit bundled with a new Korg edition of Bjooks Patch & Tweak that will show you how to use it.

Update 7/03/23: After a long wait, Korg finally catches up with the release of “Patch & Tweak with Korg”. The full bundle, including the book and the NTS-2 Oscilloscope, are now available as originally intended. There’s no information on whether Korg intends to release the NTS-2 by itself. It seems like an obvious thing to do, especially for people who already have the book.

(Original post from 10/05/22) It’s been a while since Korg released the NTS-1 synthesizer and effects kit. I think we first saw it at Superbooth in 2019. Korg suggested at the time that a bunch of similar products and developments would follow. And finally, we have something new – the Nu:Tekt NTS-2.

Korg NTS-2

The NTS-2 is a Swiss Army knife of useful electronic and synthesizer utility. The most obvious function is the oscilloscope. Fantastic for monitoring and analysing waveforms, understanding signals and visualising voltages. It has 4 input channels which puts it on par with the very popular Mordax DATA Eurorack scope. Although not being screwed into a rack makes the NTS-2 that bit more versatile.

Other features include a dual waveform generator which you can use as an oscillator or LFO modulation source, a tuner and a full-colour spectrum analyser. The tuner will be enormously valuable when getting your oscillators tuned up. It’s the sort of box that’s always good to have to hand when you are working with audio and CV signals.

Like the NTS-1 it comes as a simple, screw-together kit and is powered via USB. It has a generous range of connections giving you individual outputs on those waveforms and dual stereo pass-through ports so you can keep it connected.

Patch & Tweak with Korg

You can almost guarantee that you’ll find a book from the Patch & Tweak series on the coffee table of every synth enthusiast. Written by Kim Bjørn they are a fantastic resource full of history, interviews, detail, ideas and superb photography.

This edition is written especially for Korg and focuses on semi-modular synthesis through products such as the ARP 2600M, Volca Modular and SQ-64 sequencer. It specifically brings in the NTS-2 as the tool you need for exploring these machines and understanding the movement of signals.

It’s an excellent book for anyone interested in synthesizers, whether you own the synths in question or not.

Bundle

While I’m sure both of these items will be available individually, Korg is marketing it as a bundle. As an added bonus, you get some stickers and a little transparent stand for the NTS-2. The price is €229 for the bundle, which puts the cost of the NTS-2 probably at around €150.

The NTS-2 looks brilliant and is the sort of thing I can immediately put to work in my rig and work it into my Eurorack DIY workbench. It’s not necessarily expensive for what you get, the Mordax DATA is £389 after all, but you can pick up simple oscilloscope kits that use a very similar screen for £20-£30. But the additional functionality is really welcome and so is a massive and awesome book which will tell you how to use it.
