Paradox EQ and compressor

Combining an equalizer with a compressor makes for a powerful processing package. Developer Soundspot’s Paradox plug-in takes advantage of the concept by offering a combination of push-pull equalizer and variable RMS parallel compressor with stereo and mid/side processing.

A push-pull equalizer works with the classic Pultec curve where simultaneous frequency cutting and boosting is obtained around a single frequency. In addition to Gain and Frequency controls, each EQ filter (of which there are four) has three controls to adjust the push-pull shape. The Curve control adjusts the filter width, the Balance control specifies the filter boost, and the Twist control pans the push-pull filter left or right. This way, Soundspot claims, pronounced filtering effects can be achieved easily.

The compressor, meanwhile, uses an infinite gain reduction setup and its continuous RMS-time control emulates classic analog compression behaviour. It also has a high-pass sidechain filter which lets you leave the lower frequencies untouched while compressing the rest of the mix. The continuous mix control lets you dial in exactly how much compressed signal you want on top of the original audio to achieve parallel compression.

Paradox has a modern, dark user interface with big, clearly labelled controls and colourful frequency visualization. With its functionality and style, it seems geared towards electronic music producers.

With a low introductory price of GBP 18 (GBP 59 regular), and compatibility with all major DAWs on Windows and Mac, Paradox is an interesting tool for power producers looking to tighten up their mix without resorting to the usual complex effects chain.
