Developer Sonible has released an interesting compressor called smart:comp. The plug-in belongs to the same family as smart:eq 2, which you can read more about here. smart:comp is designed around the concept of spectral compression – input signal is continuously analyzed across more than 2000 bands, with the plug-in acting as an intelligent multiband compressor that’s able to dynamically smooth out tonal imbalances. An A.I.-powered algorithm automatically optimizes the compressor in accordance with the incoming audio signal.
Another highlight is the frequency-dependent ducking feature in sidechain mode. It makes smart:comp listen for spectral clashes and dynamically duck affected frequency regions. The compressor’s user interface is quite welcoming, styled as a regular single-band compressor with frequency and spectral visualizers. You get the regular Threshold, Ratio, Attack and Release controls, a Spectral Compression On/Off switch, and a Dry/Wet mix knob. Presets are available as well, although with a self-adjusting compressor at your disposal, I’d like to think one won’t really have to depend on them.
Overall, this is a work of modern programming that could possibly make it easier for both novice and experienced producers to controlling dynamics. Sonible’s AI technology is certainly promising and it’s nice to see the developer growing it across other plug-in types.
Price and availability
Sonible is selling smart:comp for an introductory EUR 89, down from EUR 129. A fully functional 30-day trial is available upon registering for the developer’s newsletter. The plug-in is compatible with Windows (32/64-bit) and Mac (64-bit) computers and available in AU, VST2, VST3 and AAX formats.
