Continuing the tradition of dropping the keyboard from their line of synths, Sequential’s newest synth gets the treatment along with an MPE update!
I guess it was only a matter of time before Sequential catered for those of us with far too many keyboards! Fresh out of the factory comes the Trigon-6 Desktop, a Trigon-6 in every respect except… well, it doesn’t have a keyboard. Released in November of 2022, the original Trigon-6 was Dave Smith’s last creation for Sequential.
Same Synth, No Keys
Just like the original Trigon-6, it features three discrete VCO’s and a switchable 2/4-pole resonant low pass ladder filter per voice. The filter can be driven to self-oscillation and is married to a bi-polar envelope. Performance features include a 64 step polyphonic sequencer and arpeggiator. The 24-bit/48kHz effects include stereo analogue distortion, reverb, delay and modulation FX including a ring modulator. You can also polychain two Trigon-6’s together for a big ol’ 12 voices of polyphony.
What a lot of people will be more interested in is the updated firmware for the desktop version. MPE support is now present, allowing users to control a myriad parameters for greater expression. MPE will definitely open up the Trigon-6 beyond its original abilities whilst an MPE controller is, naturally, required. Osmose, anyone? It appears the new firmware is also available for the regular Trigon-6. One imagines an MPE controller will be required to access those features.
When I first played the Trigon-6 at Superbooth earlier this year, I admit to being a tad underwhelmed. For me, it didn’t seem to have as distinct a character as other Sequential synths. The addition of MPE will certainly spice things up no end. I’m very much looking forward to seeing people using an Osmose with one. I imagine the blend of its digital tones with the analogue beef of the Trigon-6 will be very interesting.
Both the Trigon-6 Desktop and new firmware are available now. MRP for the Desktop is €2799, a considerable saving over the keyboard version. Shipping starts within 6-8 weeks.
