It’s a sad day as Sequential announces the end of the Prophet X: “We’ll be waving goodbye to new Prophet X units.”
Sequential Prophet X
Sequential is often thought of as an analogue synthesizer company thanks to its groundbreaking Prophet-5 and others in the Prophet line. However, that line has also historically included some digital synths. This includes the Prophet VS, Prophet 2000 sampler and Prophet X.
It’s Time To Say Goodbye
The Prophet X is a hybrid digital/analogue synth with sample playback, digital oscillators and analogue filters. It has now reached the end of its run. In an announcement on its Facebook page, Sequential stated that the 2018 synth will no longer be available after the current stock runs out:
“Since its debut in 2018, the Prophet X has been a constant source of sonic adventure for musicians around the world, blending the warmth of analog synthesis with the endless potential of sampling.”
The post went on to state that the reason was due to a component shortage. It didn’t specify which ones though:
“With a heavy heart, we must announce that due to the unavailability of several key components, we’ll be waving goodbye to new Prophet X units after our current stock depletes.”
Lack Of Components
Sequential went on to say that they were committed to ongoing tech support. This will ensure “Prophet X continues to be a reliable partner in your musical journeys, while our friends at 8Dio will carry on offering a treasure trove of PX Add-On sample packs to keep your sound palette fresh and evolving.”
The San Francisco-based company created the Prophet X in collaboration with sample provider 8Dio.
Sequential Prophet X: Farewell
Sequential ended the post with a thank you. “Thank you to everyone who has embraced Prophet X and made it such a beloved instrument. While production is ending, the Prophet X’s impact on music will continue to resonate for decades to come.”
The Sequential Prophet X is still available, although this is only while existing supplies last.

There were some innovations, but also some truly baffling disadvantages and design limitations for the Prophet X. I think it never quite found its sweet spot despite being a featured controller and partnership with 8Dio.
For example, only mono — NOT poly — aftertouch?
